If you are enrolled in a program with automatic smart charging, you'll be able to set Charge Preferences to help WeaveGrid understand your daily needs so we can charge your car at the best times, while ensuring it's ready when you need it.
For those with a direct vehicle connection:
- Target battery level - Your charge limit pulled directly from your EV's app
- Time to be at battery level - The time you need your car fully charged to your target battery level (can be customized for each day of the week)
- Optional add-ons - Additional advanced features to further customize your charging:
- Avoid low battery levels
- Lowest cost charging only (Available to those on a rate that varies in cost by time or day)
For those with a charging station connection:
- Charging amount - We estimate mileage needs using your last 6 charges. Your charge will continue until full if your EV remains plugged in after "Time to be charged"
- Time to be charged - The time you’ll need your car to be ready (can be customized for each day of the week)
- Optional add-ons - Additional advanced features to further customize your charging:
- Lowest cost charging only (Available to those on a rate that varies in cost by time or day)
What is ‘Avoid low battery levels’?
With Avoid low battery protection enabled, your car will begin to charge automatically if your battery level falls below 20%.
If Avoid low battery protection is activated during peak hours, your battery will charge only to 20% to ensure you have a minimum charge for unexpected transportation needs and emergencies. The remainder of your charging will be optimized for off-peak hours and your battery will charge to its target level.
If you have 'Only lowest cost charging' enabled, WeaveGrid will wait until your off-peaks hours to charge your battery to 20%.
Another reason why you may want to enable Avoid low battery levels is for battery health. Keeping your charge between 20% - 80% may help extend your EV's battery life. If needed, you can adjust the target battery level from your EV's mobile app.
Note: Avoiding low battery levels is only available to select vehicles. EVSEs, Toyota, and Lexus vehicles do not currently support this functionality.
What is ‘Only lowest cost charging’?
Only lowest cost charging is a setting that ensures your EV only charges during your utility rate’s lowest-cost (off-peak) hours.*
If you are on a utility time of use rate and enable this feature, cost savings are prioritized over your target battery level. If your off-peak window is too short to reach your target, charging will stop when the on-peak period begins—even if your battery hasn't reached its goal (e.g., your car may stop at 70% instead of your 90% target). This means WeaveGrid can’t guarantee your daily charging needs will be met.
Compatibility & Requirements:
- Rate Plans: This feature is only relevant for drivers on a Time-of-Use (TOU) utility rate plan.
- Device Support: This is available for all home charging stations and most vehicles participating in a program with automatic smart charging.
- It is currently not compatible with Toyota and Lexus models.
If you have other add-ons enabled (like Avoid low battery levels), WeaveGrid will balance these preferences. The system will attempt to meet your battery needs while still strictly avoiding on-peak charging.
*It’s possible you can still see small amounts of charging during peak hours, even if your preferences are set to avoid them. This can be caused by your vehicle, not WeaveGrid. Some vehicles automatically “top off” the battery if it loses small amounts of charge while parked, and features like preconditioning (warming or cooling the car before a trip) can also trigger brief charging. To reduce this, you can disable battery-draining features (like Sentry Mode for Teslas), adjust preconditioning settings, or unplug your vehicle if it will be idle for long periods.
How do these optional add-ons interact with one another?
WeaveGrid prioritizes charging during the lowest-cost times while meeting your daily needs. These optional add-ons give you flexibility to prioritize other factors like avoiding low battery levels or maximizing cost savings.
Lowest cost charging only + any other add-on: When "Lowest cost charging only" is enabled with any other add-on, charging will only occur during your lowest-cost rate periods - even if this means other features work differently.
Example: If you enable both "Avoid low battery levels" AND "Low cost charging only," we will charge to 20% to protect your battery - but only during your lowest-cost hours. This means if you plug in below 20% during an on-peak period, we'll wait until off-peak hours to provide that low battery protection.
